MODERNIST WHITE LINE WOODCUT MONOPRINTS

The origins of White Line woodcut printmaking was a group of early 20th Century ,mainly women, artists in Princetown,New England. They are principally woodcuts with multicoloured images. Printed from just one single block of wood. They are a hybrid of monoprints and Japanese style multi-block woodcuts. The doyenne of this evolved abstract mid 20th century art is The American Modernist Artist Blanche Lazell.

I undertook a series of 1 to 1 masterclass sessions with a modern day exponent of the art form with Massachusetts artist printmaker Kate Hanlon.

PRINTING COMBINED WITH FUSED GLASS WORK - session 1

These 6 photos show the BACK of glass panels that were worked on with black and white glass paint. When fired I then worked on the reverse side with coloured and plain glass shards before firing for a second time . Finished pieces can be seen on portfolio page.

Next steps - experimenting with roller and lino block printing onto glass using enamel glass paints mixed with a water based medium.

MOKUHANGA

Attended masterclass 2 day workshop on Japanese Watercolour woodblock printmaking end of last year. This is a seriously demanding process requiring a tolerance of frustration at every stage!

It is one thing to know a process can take a lifetime to master and perfect but it is quite another to look at your initial attempts and think a toddler might even question their quality.

It is certainly good to be challenged as an experienced printmaker but two months of patient practice is making me wonder if I have the required skill set to merit reasonable results.

I have spent reasonable amount of money on materials and tools which I don’t mind at all and it has certainly brought a new and tidier discipline to my workbench practice and has influenced design decisions.

In addition I am used to tearing paper for printmaking but with this process I have been slow to achieve the mm precision of using a large metal ruler and knife to achieve perfect corners essential for registration.

Also I am used to working on large designs and this is not an option for a beginner. On the plus side the cutting of the blocks is getting better but the relative quantities of watercolour, water and nori paste and dampness of paper to get a half decent flat colour is escaping me.

YouTube videos make it look straight forward.Hmm!

I am so not sure my essentially abstract designs full of colour and texture are best suited to this process at this early learning stage. I have a lot to ponder. Gradation of colour in other artists pictorial landscape work look stunning in this media.

I hope to be posting more positive updates as the months of 2020 progress.

FUSED GLASS EXPERIMENTS

Decided to treat myself to something different I booked 4 sessions with Fused Glass artist Stevie Davies at Banks Mill, Derby.

It has been great trying out something different and experimenting and learning about the properties of a completely new material for design purposes and how glass and other compounds react when fired.

I found the process of free designing of small plaques engaging and was pleased with fired results so early in the learning process. I shall be doing some more sessions in 2020 with Stevie to explore printmaking
on glass combined with fused glass processes.

SILVERY THREADS – EXHIBIT A54
'MOONLIT WALLED GARDEN'

This exhibit is a combination of intermingled bold designs with differently stitched sections patched together using bold couching fabric lines over the joins.

There are a variety of collage techniques and threadwork, with hand embroidery and free machine stitching. Two colours of Hot Fix Angelina (raspberry and ultraviolet ) are randomly patched over orange and blue background fabrics.

Each patch has at least 4 different appliqué techniques and embossing using wooden printing blocks onto both Angelina and backing fabric using the heat of an iron to keep the shape.

The translucency of the Angelina combined with the silver thread embroidery has been used to give the impression of changing reflections of a moonlit walled garden.

Most of my work is based on etchings with thread work onto paper but this piece is a free embroidered textile artwork .

SOLO EXHIBITION
'Cathedral Connections'

Derby Cathedral Coffee House, Derby
Sat 17th Dec 2011 - Fri 24th Feb 2012
www.greendoor-printmaking.co.uk

This exhibition is inspired by Derby Cathedral's 'All Souls & All Saints' windows designed by welsh artist Ceri Richards in the 1960's. The images created are not realistic representations but reflect more upon the spectacular emotional associations and impact the windows have on entering the cathedral alongside the light and airy atmosphere the overall interior provokes.

I also hope my artworks reveal something of Ceri Richard's love of poetry and music - both of which he attributes as his own sources of individual inspiration.

The works are produced by means of a combination of fine art printing techniques together with some collage & stitch work and some deconstructing and restructuring of images to enhance the richness of the designs.
